The short answer is: The pins are so thin, they don’t hurt.
Not only don’t they hurt… the experience is usually pleasant and relaxing. Here’s why: we use super-thin pins, about the thickness of 5 or 6 hairs, or the thickness of a light bulb filament. And, they are solid as well as thin, just about 1/3 the width of the hollow-bore hypodermic needle that delivers medication, the kind we all grew up with. And as the pins work, over several minutes, they increase endorphins, those are the hormones the brain releases that help us relax. But some of my patients are needle-phobic, despite what the ways I can assure them and prove to them, and if that sounds like you, read on.
Because I have met so many people over the years who have a fear of needles (pins), I have specialized in several gentle and effective techniques that do not require the use of pins. These include:
- Micro-current therapies that replace pins. I use a system of minute electric current, measured in the range of 20-100 millionths of an amp, that runs between two to four points on the body. It can relax chronic muscle knots and can accelerate healing by promoting certain kinds of molecules within damaged or weakened cells. It is a part of most of my treatments, and I use it with or without pins; and it is one of the reasons why my patients get better faster.
- Acupressure. I use gentle massage and manual point stimulation to move the energy channels in ways similar to that of the pins. Acupressure is rhythmic and relaxing, and is usually done on the forearms and lower legs, and the neck and back.
- Zero Balance™ Body Work. ZB is a whole-body treatment that releases long-held tensions from structure, meaning the skeletal system.
But you may not be so phobic: after childbirth, or the various medical tests you have undergone, or the level of chonic pain you barely tolerate every day, a few pins don’t sound so bad. You may just decide that it will cost too much. Follow through to the next paragraphs.
Your pain, your day-in-day-out exhaustion, your migraines, are already costing you money. They cost you time missed from work. They cost you reduced effectiveness at work or home. Missed family get-togethers and social engagements.
You are already paying in worry and fear, aggravation and poor sleep. You pay with your health, which is further eroded by your concerns and stress.
You could feel better in as little as one week of treatment. You could be more productive, more present for your family, more alive, living could be a pleasure again. In 2004, 85% of my patients experienced sustained, substantial improvements.
But, you might think, I would spend the money if I thought Acupuncture worked, but I don’t: there is no reliable scientific proof, it’s a primitive system that served the needs of a primitive culture, it works by the placebo effect (meaning, that if I think it will work, maybe it will, as long as I think it will.) If you are just plain skeptical of Acupuncture, read on.
Believe it; Acupuncture works.
And within the scientific community, its effectiveness is no longer in doubt. Both the treatment results and the underlying theory have stood up to scientific scrutiny. The research supports the positive results of therapy in everything from migraine headaches to osteo-arthritis, from increasing fertility for women trying to get pregnant to turning a breech-baby several weeks prior to delivery. The National Institute of Health, in 1998, sanctioned Acupuncture as a viable treatment for over 40 ailments. In 2004, the NIH verified that Acupuncture is effective in the treatment of knee pain due to osteo-arthritis.
Western science can accurately identify most acupuncture points: simple ohmmeters show these 4,000-year-old points, identified by anatomical landmarks, to have substantially higher electrical conductivity than the surface area immediately surrounding them! The only part of this medicine that still eludes Western methods of evaluation and measurement is the way energy is described as flowing from point to point, through channels or meridians.
It cannot be stated more clearly than this: Acupuncture works. Of course each individual is different and I assess each patient’s likely response to acupuncture before we begin, which is why I offer a no-charge consult.
By the way, I was just like you, skeptical that little pins could do anything useful, suspicious of something that Western medicine did not sanction, wondering if the whole effect was just a placebo.

Actually, in this area of New York State, most medical insurance does not accept acupuncture.
Some providers have ‘flex’ programs in which you can designate how some of your premiums are spent, and this will usually cover acupuncture.

Furthermore, there is a political solution. We suggest you contact your assemblyman by phone or mail, and let them know that you support legislation for ‘Acupuncture Parity’. This means that if an insurer will pay a doctor (who might have received as little as 300 hours of training in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) for acupuncture services, it must also cover a state-licensed, board-certified Acupuncturist, who has studied more than 4,000 hours to receive a Master’s degree.
